The Do's and Don'ts of Acworth, GA Basement Remodeling

Basement Remodeling Do’s and Don’ts

The first thing that comes to mind when you think about basement remodeling is a family room or a storage area. There are so many other creative things you can do with a basement these days – you don’t have to settle for tradition.  For example, you can convert an unfinished basement into a home office space, home-theater, workout room and even an extra bedroom. Some people even go as far as turning their basement into a suite that includes a kitchen, wet bar, bedroom and bathroom. Before you take your remodeling project into full force, there are a few do’s and don’ts you should remember.

DO take flooding into consideration.

If you live in an area that’s prone to flooding, you may want to re-think the idea of remodeling your basement. However, if that doesn’t faze you, make sure you use water resistant materials (i.e. flooring, tiles, etc.). You might want to forgo wall-to-wall carpeting, to say the least. You can add a nice large throw rug to give it a cozier look and feel.  If you plan on having any electronic devices in the basement, make sure you store them on shelves and not on the floor. Also, make sure your electrical wiring is well elevated.

DON’T cover up mildew or mold.

Mildew and mold can cause potential safety hazards behind your drywall, not to mention health hazards. If you discover that you have mold in your basement, hire a professional to get rid of it before you start your basement remodeling project.

DO start your remodeling project when the basement is completely dry.

You will want to make sure that your basement doesn’t have any kind of water issues that could cause damage. Simply check the exterior walls of your home for moisture issues.

DON’T finish the furnace room.

Even though a furnace can be a major eyesore, the area should be off limits to remodeling. There shouldn’t be any kind of framing around the boiler area. The general rule is to leave approximately 2ft. of extra space around the boiler.
